Testing Battery Strength

*EASY*

If the battery in your vehicle is not maintenance-free, the battery cells will be accessible. In such cases, the battery strength should be occasionally checked using a hydrometer. The hydrometer will determine the specific gravity of the electrolyte solution. Greater specific gravity denotes greater electrical charge. Each cell should be checked. Follow the instructions on the battery hydrometer. The fluid (acid) temperature should be at 80ยบ F. for a direct reading, otherwise, mathematical adjustments must be made to give an adjusted specific gravity. If any cell is below 50% charge, replace the battery. The battery charge will vary with electrolyte specific gravity as follows:

BATTERY CHARGE VS. ADJUSTED SPECIFIC GRAVITY
BATTERY CHARGE VS. ADJUSTED SPECIFIC GRAVITY
